This half-day course is aimed at yachtsmen who hold a VHF restricted operator's certificate and wish to update it to the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) Short Range Certificate.

Pre-course study
To help you come to terms with GMDSS, YachtCom has produced a PC Simulator program that is based on the DSC system outlined in the RYA publication VHF Radio (inc GMDSS) VHF G22/02.


Equipment used during the course includes :-
  • Icom IC-M421 VHF DSC marine transceiver.
  • Icom IC-M601 VHF DSC marine transceiver.
  • ICS NAV 4 plus navtex receiver
  • Nasa SX35 DSC transceiver.
  • Nasa Target Navtex receiver.
  • Pains Wessex EPIRB and SART
NOTE:
  • At YachtCom we will train you on real GMDSS equipment, with a ratio better then 1 real VHF DSC radio per 2 students. The RYA requirements is 2 radios per 12 student (ratio 1 radio per 6 students).

Student Numbers
Student numbers are kept to a maximum of 8 students per course, so early booking is advised.

Course location: The course takes place in our permanently equipped training studio at Lowford, Bursledon, Hampshire, close to the River Hamble.
